How to apply

Terms of eligibility

The candidate must hold a nationally accredited master’s degree or the equivalent.

Choosing a thesis director

The candidate must obtain the agreement of a Thesis Director to supervise his or her research. The candidate chooses his Thesis Director from among the authorized researchers and teacher-researchers within the chosen Doctoral Program.

The candidate contacts directly by email one (or more) prospective director(s) by presenting a 10 pages research proposal accompanied by a bibliography and a CV.

Once the Director’s agreement has been obtained, the candidate should ask him/her to sign a Thesis Direction request form. The application form should be attached to the application file.

A PhD Preparatory Year (PYD) may be recommended by the Thesis Director if the candidate requires a scientific and/or linguistic upgrade before starting his/her thesis, or if the candidate is orienting him/herself towards new research.

How to submit your application

Doctoral Candidate Admissions for the academic year of 2020-2021 in the 2TI Program will be open from June 15 to October 15, 2020. Applications must be submitted online on the EHESS application platform (eCandidate), accessible from the EHESS or from the EPHE website.

Any application received after October 15 will be refused.

Official registration

Official registration is done online. It is only open to candidates who have received a positive admission notice and who have accepted the admission proposal on the registration platform.

Cotutelle Studies

Doctoral study shared across two institutions requires enrolment from the first year in the doctoral program at EHESS or EPHE and in a second foreign university. The candidate shares his time equally between the two institutions and is appointed a supervisor in both institutions. Doctoral students must also sign from the first year of enrolment an agreement called the convention de cotutelle, or co-supervision agreement (the form is available from the Service de scolarité) in which the location of the eventual thesis defense is determined from the outset as well as the language of the final draft and defense. A summary in both oral and written form in the language of the second university will also be required. At the end of the defense, each institution independently awards its own PhD, resulting in the award of two diplomas.
